Amy Halbrook has worked with children and families involved in court since the 1990s. She started her professional career as the Director of Youth Services for a youth court program in Oakland, California, designed to divert young people from the traditional court process. She developed familiarity with alternative dispute resolution -- including mediation, victim-offender reconciliation, and restorative practices -- through her youth court experiences. She has always tried to keep matters out of court if possible.

Amy attended college at the University of California at Berkeley and law school at Northwestern University School of Law in Chicago. After law school, she practiced commercial litigation at Vedder Price in Chicago. She later completed clinical fellowships in Loyola University of Chicago’s Civitas ChildLaw Clinic and Northwestern University School of Law’s Children and Family Justice Center.

Amy moved her practice to Kentucky when she joined the faculty at Northern Kentucky University Chase College of Law faculty in 2011.  She is the founding director of the NKU Chase Children’s Law Center Clinic. She and her law students have represented clients in various court proceedings, including domestic relations, child welfare, domestic violence, juvenile justice, criminal, civil rights, and education matters.  She has also served as a mediator in dozens of cases in Kentucky.

Amy regularly teaches Family Law, Family Law Mediation, Juvenile Law, and several other courses at Chase College of Law. In addition, she is a frequent trial skills trainer for the American Bar Association’s Commission on Domestic and Sexual Violence. She has also served as a trial skills trainer for the National Institute for Trial Advocacy and the Gault Center (formerly the National Juvenile Defender Center.)  She is a lead trainer for Northern Kentucky University’s Alternative Dispute Resolution Center, which provides training for family law mediators in Kentucky and Ohio.

Amy is a member of the American Bar Association, the Kentucky Bar Association, and the Association of Family and Conciliation Courts. She presents and writes in the areas of family law, juvenile law, and professional responsibility. She is the current President of the Board of Community and Restorative Justice-Covington.

Amy lives in Cincinnati with her partner and her teenage son. She is a foster parent for English Bulldogs through the Buckeye Bulldog Rescue. She enjoys gardening, reading anything and everything, and spending time outdoors.
